Beware! The viper is coming in von veek!
Okay, that’s really just a bad joke whose punchline is: “Hello, it’s me, the vindow viper, I’m here to vipe your vindows!”
But what IS coming in one week is my THESIS DEFENSE! Which could be the punchline of another joke depending on how it turns out.
Looks like I’m heading back to La Casa de McCarty for a little while after graduation. I have some job prospects right now, but nothing solid. Sigh.
Baby steps, baby steps…
It’s a no go on the flagstaff job. I’m pretty bummed. My score was high though, and they hired so fast I think they may have already had someone in mind, but just had to go through the whole official posting thing. At least that’s what I’m telling myself. (Why is rejection so hard??) So now I’m coming into the reality that I’ll probably just be back in D.C. with the same buildings, streets, and people that I left 2 years ago. Still, hoping I can adjust my attitude before then…there are a ton of people there I haven’t met yet, so if I do get a job there, I just need a paradigm shift.
On a sadder note, Kurt Vonnegut died yesterday. He escaped the monkey house, but not before leaving us with some of the greatest writing ever…thanks, man.
If you want a candid slice of Americanna, check out the Overheard in New York website. It will make you laugh, cry, and sometimes fidget squeemishly in your chair. Anyway, it’s entertaining.
I found a grey hair on my head today. This felt something akin to telling a third grader that she needs to file her taxes. Is it the thesis? The joblessness? The late nights out partying till I drop? Okay, it’s definitley not the last one, but I feel like I should have earned this little bit of silver hair doing something cool…
I woke up this morning to Elsie ripping apart the cushion. Again.
Investigators open up the backdoor of a limo. There’s a guy who’s been shot in the head lying in the backseat.
Investigator One: “Looks like there’s a white, powdery substance on the seat. My guess is cocaine.”
Investigator Two: (Shine’s his light on some fleshy substance on the seat) “Then I guess that’s his brain on drugs.”
I strategically placed a chair on the couch tonight and have left Elsie out of her crate. I’m trying to see if I’m smarter than a little, fuzzy, furball of a canine. If I come home again to a scene of stuffing flying through the air like snow, I guess we’ll know who won this round of Girl vs. Dog.
I came home late last night, after having spent most of the evening working on my thesis at the coffee shop. I walked in my apartment, and my jaw dropped…Elsie had pulled the cushion off of my couch and chewed through about one fourth of it. There was stuffing and fabric everywhere. It took me a couple of minutes just to register what had happened, and during those minutes, she shot out the front door, ran around the yard and shot back in. Then she proceeded to run laps around my apartment.
I took her for a RUN yesterday! I mean, she was more exhausted than me when we came back. I thought “This is great. She’s getting great excersice and I’m wearing her out so she’ll be okay in the house while I go study.”
I guess I have a lot more to learn about dogs. And about re-upolstering a sofa.

30 days until I need to have the final draft of my thesis…
40 days until I defend…
60 days until I have to have everything revised, formatted, and approved…
67 days until I graduate.
